The annual “Shop With a Cop” event is a heartwarming tradition that brings families, kids, and police officers together. This event not only spreads holiday cheer but also builds strong community connections. In this year's event, 50 children from the 4J and Bethel School Districts had the opportunity to participate. These kids, ranging in age from 5 to 13, were paired with police officers, creating a special holiday shopping experience for them. Each child was given 200 dollars, which was funded by the Eugene Police Foundation and supported by local businesses. This generous amount allowed the children to shop for gifts for their loved ones. More than 85 volunteers, including 66 uniformed officers from various agencies such as EPD, LCSO, Oregon state police, and University of Oregon Police, came together to make this event a success. According to the organizers, this event is a crucial chance to change people's perceptions and build positive connections between police officers and the community.

Strengthening Community Bonds through Holiday Shopping

Participating Schools and Districts

The 4J and Bethel School Districts played a significant role in this year's “Shop With a Cop” event. These districts provided the opportunity for 50 children to engage in this unique holiday shopping experience. The children from these districts, with ages ranging from 5 to 13, were excited to be paired with police officers and explore the shopping world together. This collaboration between the schools and the police department shows the importance of community involvement and the positive impact it can have on the lives of children.

The event not only benefited the children but also strengthened the relationship between the schools and the police. It provided a platform for both parties to interact on a more personal level and build trust. This trust is essential for creating a safe and harmonious community.

Funding and Volunteer Support

The Eugene Police Foundation played a crucial role in funding this event. With their generous support, each child was able to receive 200 dollars to shop for gifts. This funding allowed the children to choose presents that would bring joy to their families during the holiday season. Local businesses also stepped up to support the event, showing their commitment to the community.

More than 85 volunteers, including 66 uniformed officers from different agencies, came together to make this event a reality. These volunteers dedicated their time and effort to ensure that the children had a memorable shopping experience. The presence of so many volunteers from various backgrounds added to the diversity and inclusivity of the event. It showed that the community was united in its support for this important initiative.

Changing Perceptions and Building Connections

According to the organizers, the “Shop With a Cop” event is more than just a holiday shopping trip. It is a chance to change people's perceptions of police officers and build positive connections between them and the community. By interacting with police officers on a one-on-one basis, children were able to see a different side of these officers and break down any barriers or misunderstandings.

This event has a lasting impact on both the children and the police officers involved. The children gain a newfound respect for law enforcement, while the police officers develop a deeper understanding of the community they serve. These connections are essential for creating a safer and more harmonious society.
