His natural athleticism shone early, especially in basketball, where he could dunk at just 12 years old. His achievements include setting state records in track and field and leading his high school football team to a historic victory. Despite initial struggles with baseball, he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. However, legal issues and injuries derailed his professional career. Today, Basil is celebrated as one of Pine Bluff's greatest athletes and will be inducted into the Jefferson County Sports Hall of Fame in April 2025.

As a sophomore, he set state records in the high jump, 200-meter dash, and long jump. In his senior year, Basil led the Pine Bluff Zebras to a decisive victory against the undefeated Texarkana team, earning him the nickname "The Great Shabazz."

Despite his prowess in multiple sports, Basil chose baseball for his college career. Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, he showed promise but faced difficulties adapting to the sport professionally. Nevertheless, his raw talent earned him recognition, including being named to the Appalachian League All-Star team. Tragedy struck when legal troubles and a neck injury derailed his career. After recovering, Basil enrolled at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, where he resumed playing football until another injury forced him to reconsider his future.
