In a low-income household where every dime matters for basic necessities, it is nearly impossible for parents to afford extracurricular tutoring, technology lessons, and other enrichment activities. These kids often struggle to keep up with their peers and have limited access to opportunities that can shape their future.
For example, Rigoberto Lopez, a recent alumnus of BGCCV, came from a humble household with a single parent. Despite his home responsibilities, he remained dedicated to his education and aimed to enter college by 10th grade. Such stories highlight the importance of additional support for these underserved children.
BGCCV has been a game-changer for hundreds of children over the years. With its four well-maintained and staffed campuses, kids have access to a plethora of activities and resources.
Through Project Learn, the staff uses all areas and programs in the clubs to create high-yield learning opportunities. This includes leisure reading, writing, discussions with professionals, homework help, tutoring, and games that enhance cognitive skills. Parent involvement and collaboration with school officials also play a crucial role.
The success rate of the young people at BGCCV is truly remarkable. Hundreds have gone on to attend and finish high school and college due to the opportunities provided by the club.
Rigoberto Lopez is a prime example. During his junior and senior high school years, he enrolled in dual courses at College of the Desert and completed 33 college credits by graduation. He is now part of the support staff at the BGCCV Mecca Club House, managing the tech room and leading various programs.
These success stories demonstrate the direct correlation between education and success, as emphasized by the President and CEO Quinton Egson, who believes that "education first" is the motto of BGCCV.
