In a significant move on Monday, Charlotte has parted ways with head coach Biff Poggi, as revealed by a person with knowledge of the decision. This brings an end to his tenure, which lasted less than two full seasons. Poggi's on-field record during this time was less than impressive, going 6-16 in two years. Specifically, he had a 3-9 record last season and started the current season at 3-7, suffering a crushing 59-24 loss to USF on Saturday. In the interim, associate head coach Tim Brewster will take on the coaching duties.
Statement from Athletic Director
Athletic director Mike Hill expressed his gratitude in a statement, saying, "I am thankful to Biff Poggi for his leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes over these past two seasons. No one can question Biff's passion for helping young people succeed in life, both personally and professionally. However, our on-field results have unfortunately fallen short of everyone's expectations. As we move forward into the next chapter of Charlotte 49er Football, we will be seeking a leader who can take our program to the next level and make it a consistent bowl and championship contender."Previous Coaching Experience
Poggi had a notable coaching background. He was previously an associate head coach at Michigan and served as Jim Harbaugh's right-hand man. Although he had just one year of on-field college coaching in 1987, he was a highly successful high school coach in Maryland for decades. Additionally, he was a successful businessman, bringing a diverse set of skills to the coaching role.Charlotte's Winning History
Charlotte has faced challenges in achieving winning seasons since the program was revived in 2013. The only winning season came in 2019 under Will Healy, with a 7-6 record. This recent coaching change is part of the team's ongoing journey to establish a more consistent winning tradition and compete at a higher level.
