Chautauqua Lake Wrestlers Shine at Section VI State Qualifier

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, ten local female wrestlers from various schools in the region have earned their spots to compete in the inaugural New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls wrestling championships. The event, held on Friday at Sweet Home High School, witnessed outstanding performances, with Chautauqua Lake's Noli Paddock standing out as the Most Outstanding Wrestler. This milestone marks a significant achievement for girls' wrestling, validating its place in the state's athletic scene. Coach Pete Dorman emphasized the importance of this recognition, noting the sport's growth and legitimacy. The competition showcased not only individual excellence but also highlighted the collective strength of the participating athletes.

The 132-pound bracket saw freshman Noli Paddock dominate, securing victories against formidable opponents. Her journey began with a technical fall over Gisela Ramos from Health Sciences, followed by two quick pins against Kendra Carter from Sweet Home and Suzie Nebrich from Fredonia. In the final match, Paddock triumphed over Sofia Guadagna from Sweet Home within a minute, cementing her status as an exceptional wrestler. Coach Dorman expressed high hopes for Paddock, aiming for her to clinch the state championship title. The other qualifiers included Anastazia Hale from Falconer, Kassidy Benedetto and Lilly Hyde from Chautauqua Lake, Damarielys Cruz from Dunkirk, Braelynn Wicks and McKella Hodkin from Fredonia, Kiernan Quinn from Gowanda, Kimberly Bauer from Fredonia, and Jaslieen Salgado from Dunkirk.

Hale, another freshman, demonstrated impressive control in the 94-pound category, earning three technical falls en route to the championship. She defeated Mimi Abuhmeidan, Audiyanna Cheverez, and finally Kassidy Benedetto in the final. Meanwhile, Lilly Hyde, also a freshman, excelled in the 152-pound division, overcoming challenges from teammates and opponents alike. Hyde secured her title with a series of decisive moves, including a dramatic pin just before time expired. Other notable performances came from Kimberly Bauer, who pinned Meghan Pauley in the 185-pound final, and Damarielys Cruz, who took second place in the 100-pound bracket after a tough final against Gabriella Gelnett.

Beyond the top finishers, several local wrestlers achieved commendable results. Alice Scarpine from Chautauqua Lake placed third at 114 pounds, showcasing resilience in her matches. Audiyanna Cheverez secured third place at 94 pounds, while Kortlyn Fairbank claimed third at 100 pounds. Eva Colon-DeJesus from Dunkirk also finished third in the 132-pound bracket. Bailey Fuller from Frewsburg and Maelonnee Bacelli from Salamanca rounded out the top four in their respective weight classes, highlighting the depth of talent in the region.

The success of these young athletes underscores the growing prominence of girls' wrestling in the state.
