In the early hours of a frigid Monday morning, a mother and her four children, along with their grandmother and another child, sought shelter in a van inside the parking garage of Hollywood Casino at Greektown. The group had been experiencing homelessness and was using the vehicle as temporary refuge. During the night, the van’s engine malfunctioned, leaving them without heat in sub-zero temperatures. By noon, the unimaginable happened—the mother discovered that her 9-year-old son was not breathing. A family friend rushed him to the hospital, only to return moments later when the grandmother reported that the 2-year-old girl was also unresponsive. Both children tragically passed away, with police suspecting hypothermia as the cause, though the official determination is pending from the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The funeral home, New McFall Brothers, has offered free services to the family, and a public visitation will be held on February 19th, followed by a service at Triumph Church the next day.
