Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - The Pirate Toy Fund is on a mission to collect an astonishing 25,000 toys for children in need this holiday season. A remarkable goal for a nonprofit that began nearly three decades ago with the collection of around 400 toys. Each year, the numbers fluctuate, but they are merely a byproduct of one essential thing: the well-being of the kids.
Compassion Shown by Kids
Throughout the week, the extent of kids' willingness to assist their peers was truly astonishing. 4-year-old James Netkin expressed, "I want other kids to be happy." This sentiment was echoed by Avery Wegman, an Aquinas Institute senior who said, "I just love being able to help out the community and everyone around me. I'm glad that these toys will go to good homes and everyone can have a Christmas present this year."The compassion shown by kids of all ages was truly heartwarming. Some even grasped the concept of paying it forward, remembering how they felt during difficult times and knowing that help was on the way. Leah, a senior at Aquinas, said, "I think they'll feel very excited that people understand what they're going through and are trying to assist them."Youth Baseball Team's Contribution
A youth baseball team also pitched in to help the Pirate Toy Fund. Their dedication and sense of community were evident as they worked together to make a difference. One girl said, "I hope they appreciate it so much when they're sick." Their actions demonstrated that even young ones can have a significant impact.Gary the Happy Pirate's Legacy
Gary the Happy Pirate would be immensely proud to see the efforts of these local kids. Although he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on through their actions.
