Daystar Kids, a nonprofit organization serving children with complex medical conditions, is set to undergo a major expansion with the help of $3 million in state funding. The organization, which operates New York state's only pediatric complex care and learning center, will move into a larger, 48,000-square-foot facility in Brighton, allowing it to more than double the number of children it serves.

Transforming Lives, One Child at a Time

Providing a Welcoming Environment for Medically Complex Children

Daystar Kids' mission is to support children with complex medical conditions as they transition from the hospital to home and until they enroll in kindergarten. These children often face challenges in finding welcoming environments in traditional day care or school settings. Daystar Kids aims to change that by creating a safe, nurturing, and inclusive space where these children can thrive. The new facility will enable Daystar Kids to expand its reach from 60 to 130 children, ensuring more families have access to the specialized care and support they need. "When children — our little ones, from birth to 5 — have complex medical problems, they don't always feel welcome in day care or welcome in schools," said New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald. "Here, these children feel welcome. The care they get is amazing. This is not just a school for them; it's a home for them."

Investing in the Future of Medically Complex Children

The $3 million in state funding, combined with a recent $5 million gift from Tom Golisano, will help Daystar Kids realize its vision of a larger, state-of-the-art facility. The project is estimated to cost $20 million, and the new center is expected to be open by January 2026.This investment in Daystar Kids' expansion represents a significant commitment to supporting the unique needs of children with complex medical conditions. By providing a dedicated space and specialized care, the organization aims to empower these children and their families, helping them navigate the challenges they face and ensuring a smooth transition from hospital to home.

Fostering Inclusion and Empowering Families

Daystar Kids' approach goes beyond just providing medical care; it also focuses on creating a nurturing and inclusive environment that caters to the social, emotional, and educational needs of the children it serves. The organization's staff works closely with families to develop personalized care plans, ensuring that each child receives the support they need to thrive.By expanding its facilities and services, Daystar Kids will be able to reach more families and make a lasting impact on the lives of children with complex medical conditions. This investment in the future of these children is a testament to the organization's commitment to empowering and supporting the most vulnerable members of our community.
