College football enthusiasts were on the edge of their seats as the third College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday. The Big Ten's hold on the top five positions was once again evident, with four out of the top five spots claimed by this conference. Oregon, with an impressive 11-0 record, maintained its top seed for the third consecutive week. After a thrilling fourth-quarter comeback, they defeated Wisconsin 16-13. Ohio State, with a dominant 31-7 win over Northwestern, remained in second place. Texas, Penn State, and Indiana rounded out the top five with records of 9-1, 9-1, and 10-0 respectively.
BYU's Fall and Tennessee's Out
BYU, which entered the rankings with a 9-1 record, suffered a significant setback as they dropped eight spots to No. 14 after losing to Kansas. This was their first loss of the season. Tennessee, on the other hand, fell four spots to No. 11 following a 31-17 loss to Georgia. The 2024 College Football Playoff will see a significant expansion, featuring 12 teams instead of the previous four-team format since 2014. The 12-team field will consist of five conference champions ranked highest by the College Football Playoff selection committee and the next seven highest-ranked teams.The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded No. 1 through No. 4 and receive a first-round bye. The fifth highest-ranked conference champion will also secure a spot in the College Football Playoff and will be seeded based on their ranking. (If the fifth highest-ranked conference champion is outside the Top 12, they will be seeded at No. 12.)Teams seeded Nos. 5 through 9 will host first-round games on their campuses against teams seeded Nos. 9 through 12 on either Dec. 20 or Dec. 21. The winners of these games will advance to the quarterfinals at the Fiesta Bowl (Dec. 31), Sugar Bowl (Jan. 1), Peach Bowl (Jan. 1), and the Rose Bowl (Jan. 1). The Orange Bowl (Jan. 9) and Cotton Bowl (Jan. 10) will host the semifinals.The championship game will take place on Jan. 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
