Since the onset of the pandemic, Eloise's Cooking Pot Food Bank has witnessed a remarkable surge in the demand for food. With its 15-year presence in Tacoma, Pierce County, this food bank has been a lifeline for countless individuals and families. On Wednesday, at the Tacoma Dome, they held their weekly drive-up food giveaway, which this week also included grocery store gift cards for their special Thanksgiving event. Hundreds of cars lined up, testament to the critical need.

"Feeding the Community with Love and Dignity"

History and Impact

Eloise's Cooking Pot Food Bank has been serving the community for 15 years. Its owner, Ahndrea Blue, started it 15 years ago and named it after her African-American grandmother. Just in the past few years since the pandemic, the need for food has skyrocketed. They serve around 75,000 people each month through various means such as food giveaways, home food deliveries, and mobile food pantries. Blue proudly states that they give out 1.5 million pounds of food every month. This food bank is not just about providing sustenance; it's about showing love and care to those in need.

Clients like Sheree Staples have been relying on Eloise's Cooking Pot for the past two years. She explains, "If you go to the store, you're going to spend $40 every time. But the nice foods they give help you through the month. It's not just about the food; it's the love and dignity they show." Such stories highlight the profound impact of the food bank on people's lives.

Blue also mentioned that they serve families, elderly people, and have seen an increase in military members in need. This shows the diverse range of people who benefit from the food bank's services.

Expansion and Partnerships

The drive-up food giveaways initially used to be held in a neighborhood near their current location on McKinley Avenue. However, due to the large turnout, they needed more space and partnered with the Tacoma Dome two years ago. DeMeSHee Pye, the Community Impact Coordinator for Tacoma Venues and Events, emphasizes, "I'm from the area and this is how we show up for our community. We have this open lot available, and it's a great way to partner with someone giving back."

This partnership has allowed them to reach more people and provide a more organized and efficient service. It also showcases the collaborative spirit within the community to address the issue of food insecurity.

Despite their efforts, Eloise's Cooking Pot is still in need of monetary and food donations. They have a waiting list of 1,500 people for home food deliveries. You can make a difference by donating on their website or bringing food to their location at 3543 E. McKinley Avenue in Tacoma.

Community Support and Encouragement

Clients and employees of Eloise's Cooking Pot encourage others to reach out for assistance if they are in need. Sheree Staples says, "Never be embarrassed because we're all in this together." This sense of community support is what keeps the food bank going and helps those in need feel less alone.

The work of Eloise's Cooking Pot Food Bank is a shining example of how a community can come together to address a critical issue. Through their efforts, they are making a significant impact on the lives of many and providing hope in times of need.
