Basketball Star Isaac Taveras Returns to Southern Miss Eagles

In a significant development for college basketball, Isaac Taveras, a prominent guard for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, has decided to pull his name from the transfer portal and rejoin his team. This announcement, made on June 5, comes as a major relief and boost for the Southern Miss program. Taveras had initially entered the transfer portal on April 2, and his subsequent decision to stay marks him as one of the most impactful players to return to their original squad this offseason.

Taveras was a standout performer for the Golden Eagles last season, showcasing his versatility and talent on the court. He was the team's second-leading scorer, averaging an impressive 15.3 points per game, and also held the second-highest rebounding average with 6.8 boards per contest. Additionally, his defensive prowess was evident as he led the team in steals, averaging over 2.2 per game. Despite missing a portion of conference play due to a wrist injury, Taveras’s return coincided with a strong finish to the season for Southern Miss, as they secured victories in seven of their last ten games. His exceptional performance in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament semifinal against Troy, where he recorded a career-high 32 points on 75% shooting, nine rebounds, and four steals, highlighted his critical value to the team. Throughout the 2025 season, Taveras achieved 20 or more points in five different games, further cementing his reputation as a dynamic player.

Before joining Southern Miss, Taveras had a brief stint at Fresno State during his freshman year, where he played sparingly. He then transferred to South Plains College, a junior college in Texas, where he averaged 16.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, honing his skills before his impactful arrival at Southern Miss. His decision to return means he will be one of six key players coming back for the Golden Eagles in the 2026-27 season, promising a formidable lineup for the upcoming collegiate basketball calendar.

This re-commitment from a pivotal player like Taveras reflects not only his dedication to Southern Miss but also the potential for significant achievements ahead. His presence will undoubtedly inspire his teammates and contribute to a positive and competitive environment within the program, paving the way for a season filled with strong performances and team unity.
