Florida Gators Secure Catcher Jon Embury from Transfer Portal

The Florida Gators baseball program has successfully recruited junior catcher Jon Embury from Florida Gulf Coast through the transfer portal, marking the second consecutive year head coach Kevin O'Sullivan has sought catching talent this way. With seniors Karson Bowen and Cole Stanford departing due to eligibility, and rising senior AJ Malzone facing injury setbacks, the Gators had a critical need for a new everyday catcher.

Embury brings impressive offensive capabilities to the team. In 2026, he posted a .364 batting average, a .429 on-base percentage, and a .655 slugging percentage, culminating in a 1.084 OPS. He was a dominant force for the Eagles, leading them with 17 home runs and 60 runs batted in, while also ranking second in hits with 80 and third with 13 doubles. Beyond his powerful bat, Embury demonstrated enhanced plate discipline in his sophomore year, reducing his strikeout rate to 15.7% from 29.9% and increasing his walk rate to 7.9% from 4.5%. Although he is converting from third base, Embury has prior experience as a catcher in high school and possesses a strong throwing arm, having thrown out 55.6% of baserunners last season.

This strategic acquisition of Jon Embury is expected to significantly bolster the Gators' lineup and defensive capabilities. His proven track record of offensive production and his continuous improvement in fundamental skills suggest a bright future for him in the SEC. Embury's commitment underscores the team's proactive approach to talent acquisition, aiming to maintain a competitive edge in collegiate baseball and setting a strong foundation for future successes.
