Lancaster Prevails Over Corning in NYS Class AAA Softball Quarterfinals, Ending Corning's Undefeated Run

In a repeat of previous seasons, the Corning softball team's aspirations for a state title were once again cut short by their formidable rivals, Lancaster, in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Class AAA regional final. This decisive 3-1 defeat not only ended Corning's undefeated 18-0 streak and their top ranking in Class AAA but also mirrored last year's elimination by the same Section 6 champions.

The highly anticipated state quarterfinal showdown took place at Gates-Chili High School, pitting Corning's ace pitcher, Matti Johnston, against Lancaster's resilient offense. For the initial five innings, Johnston showcased her dominance, maintaining a flawless performance by allowing no base runners. However, the sixth inning proved to be the turning point in the fiercely contested match.

Lancaster's Alyssa Brunner shattered Johnston's perfect game with a lead-off home run to right-center field, leveling the score. The Legends continued their momentum, as Isabella DiMino singled and capitalized on an error to put Lancaster ahead 2-1. Abigail DiMino then extended their lead with a crucial two-out RBI single, giving Lancaster a two-run cushion.

In their final attempt to mount a comeback, Corning's Katie Grover hit a single with one out in the seventh inning. Despite the late effort, the Hawks' offense, which had been a driving force behind their undefeated record, was unable to generate further runs. Lancaster's pitcher, Maddy Matthews, delivered a stellar performance, limiting Corning to five hits, striking out eight batters, and issuing only one walk.

Corning's sole run came early in the first inning when Johnston led off with a single and later scored on Sophie Schoonover's blooper that landed safely in the infield. Johnston's pitching efforts were commendable, allowing just three hits and recording seven strikeouts without any walks over six innings, though two of Lancaster's runs were unearned. Both Grover and Schoonover contributed two hits each for Corning.

This match marked the second consecutive year Lancaster had ended Corning's playoff journey, having previously defeated them 6-3 in last year's state semifinals. Lancaster ultimately went on to win the championship, beating Massapequa 4-2. Corning, a team with a strong legacy, had been vying for their third consecutive trip to the final four and had claimed the inaugural Class AAA championship two years prior. With this victory, Lancaster (14-5) is set to face Section 2's Saratoga Springs in the state semifinal on Friday, June 12, at Greenlight Park, continuing their quest for another state title.

The recent state quarterfinal saw Lancaster overcome a strong challenge from Corning, securing their advancement to the next round. This victory is particularly significant as it maintains Lancaster's winning record against Corning in crucial playoff encounters, reinforcing their reputation as a dominant force in high school softball. The outcome of this game highlights the competitive nature of the NYSPHSAA Class AAA softball tournament and sets the stage for an exciting semifinal match-up.
