The baseball season across the Monroe County Region has officially concluded. Both Monroe and Summerfield, the final local teams remaining in the playoffs, faced elimination after suffering losses in their regional championship games last Saturday. Monroe endured a substantial 14-0 defeat against Dexter in a Division 1 contest, while Summerfield was overcome 4-0 by Kalamazoo Hackett. Interestingly, the teams that ousted Monroe and Summerfield also saw their championship aspirations end later that same day in state quarterfinal matchups, marking a comprehensive conclusion to the season's campaigns.
Monroe's Division 1 journey ended with a record of 18-18 in Greg Depew's inaugural season as head coach. Despite narrow losses to Dexter earlier in the season, totaling just six runs across three games, Saturday's regional final saw the Trojans fall behind early and fail to recover. The game concluded after five innings due to the mercy rule. Looking ahead, the team is set to retain a significant portion of its roster for the upcoming spring season, with only a few key seniors — Carson Liedel, Asher Simmons, Aiden Homer, and Cooper Robinson — departing from the starting lineup.
In Division 4, Summerfield's season ended in Spring Arbor. Pitcher Reece Kalb delivered an outstanding performance, maintaining a no-hitter until the sixth inning. Coach Reid Olmstead praised Kalb's effort, noting it was arguably his best outing of the year. However, Hackett capitalized on a critical sixth inning, loading the bases with walks and a misplayed bunt before scoring four runs, beginning with a sacrifice fly and followed by two singles. Summerfield's offense struggled to generate runs, managing only a double from Rylee Schiffler and singles from Russell LaRocca and Josh Horak. Despite having runners in scoring position multiple times, the Bulldogs couldn't secure the crucial hit needed to score.
Coach Olmstead reflected on the team's overall performance, highlighting their strong play and minimal errors, with only one recorded during the game. Summerfield finished Olmstead's fifth season coaching his alma mater with a commendable 17-8 record, having shared the Tri-County Conference championship with Whiteford and secured a district title. Olmstead expressed satisfaction with the season, particularly winning the league for the first time since 2019. However, the team faces a rebuilding phase next year, as nine seniors, including four starters, will graduate. Olmstead acknowledged the challenge of replacing such talented players but remains optimistic, citing a promising group of young players and an anticipated large freshman class.
This year's baseball season for Monroe County Region teams, Monroe and Summerfield, culminated in regional championship defeats. Both teams, after hard-fought campaigns, saw their playoff runs conclude, with the victors also facing elimination shortly thereafter. Despite the losses, both programs demonstrated resilience and achieved notable milestones throughout their seasons, setting the stage for future development and success.
