Basketball Maestro Paul Westhead Receives Esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award

In an announcement made on Friday, June 5th, 2026, the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA) proudly named Paul Westhead as the recipient of the 2026 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award. This esteemed honor celebrates Westhead's profound and enduring contributions to basketball over nearly four decades.

Westhead's illustrious coaching journey includes a unique distinction: he remains the sole head coach to have clinched championship titles in both the NBA and the WNBA. His career, spanning an impressive 38 years, saw him guide teams across various echelons of the sport, including the NBA, WNBA, NCAA, and international leagues.

His tenure as an NBA head coach included stints with the Los Angeles Lakers (1979-1982), the Chicago Bulls (1982), and the Denver Nuggets (1990-1992). Notably, he led the Lakers to an NBA championship victory in 1980. Continuing his trail-blazing career, Westhead coached the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury from 2006 to 2007, securing another championship in 2007, solidifying his status as a versatile and successful leader.

Beyond the professional circuits, Westhead's collegiate coaching roles included head positions at La Salle (1970-1979), Loyola Marymount (1985-1990), and George Mason (1993-1997). He also mentored the Oregon women's basketball team from 2009 to 2014. On the international stage, he brought his expertise to Wakayama in Japan's National Basketball League.

Reflecting on his career, Westhead expressed gratitude for his colleagues. In a heartfelt statement, he acknowledged, “I am thankful for all the coaches who worked with me during my NBA coaching career, from Jack McKinney, who gave me my start with the LA Lakers, to P.J. Carlesimo, who hired me for my last job with the Seattle SuperSonics.”

Westhead was particularly acclaimed for his development of high-octane, up-tempo offenses. These strategies famously compelled both competing teams to adopt a fast-break style, pushing scoreboards to their limits and captivating audiences. His innovative approach challenged traditional basketball thinking.

NBCA president J.B. Bickerstaff, also the current head coach of the Detroit Pistons, lauded Westhead's far-reaching influence. “Coach Westhead's impact on the game extends far beyond wins and championships,” Bickerstaff stated. “He challenged conventional thinking, introduced ideas that were ahead of their time, and influenced generations of coaches across every level of men's and women's basketball.”

This accolade places Westhead among an elite group of past recipients, including legendary figures such as Don Nelson (2025), Rudy Tomjanovich (2024), Rick Adelman (2023), and Larry Brown (2021), among others, further cementing his legacy as a titan of basketball coaching.

Paul Westhead's recognition with the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award is a powerful reminder of how innovative thinking and a commitment to evolution can redefine a sport. His legacy isn't just in the trophies he lifted but in the minds he opened and the game he forever changed. Coaches and fans alike can draw inspiration from his career, which exemplifies the impact of challenging norms and fostering a dynamic, forward-thinking approach to leadership and strategy.
