Westerville Central Softball Advances to State Championship

The Westerville Central softball team has earned its place among the top two teams in the state, preparing to compete for the Division II state championship on June 7. Their journey to the final was solidified with a commanding 7-0 victory over Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit, propelled by a pivotal five-run outburst in the second inning at Akron's Firestone Stadium. This historic achievement marks the first time Central has reached the state championship game.

With an impressive 28-2 record, the Warhawks are now focused on capturing their inaugural championship title, aiming to conclude their season on an remarkable 22-game winning streak. They are set to face Kings Mills Kings in the final showdown at 4 p.m. on June 7, following Kings' own dominant 7-1 win against the reigning champions, Painesville Riverside, in their semifinal match. Despite only accumulating four hits, Westerville Central strategically capitalized on four errors made by Walsh Jesuit, ensuring no runners were left stranded on base.

The offensive efforts were led by senior third baseman Hannah Pullins, who contributed two hits, and sophomore outfielder Christelle Crosier, whose team-leading tenth home run initiated the scoring in the first inning. The crucial second inning saw sophomore outfielders Jane LeMasters and Haley Hickok drawing walks, with LeMasters scoring on Lydia Miller's RBI single. Jess Hickok then reached base on an error, loading the bases for Pullins, who delivered a two-run single. Subsequent errors allowed Jess Hickok and Pullins to also score, extending their lead to 6-0. Pullins further added to the score in the fifth inning, demonstrating her speed with a single, two stolen bases, and then scoring on a throwing error by Walsh Jesuit's catcher. Sophomore pitcher Elliott Long delivered a stellar performance, securing the win with nine strikeouts, no walks, and scattering only four hits. This victory also ended Walsh Jesuit's 23-game winning streak, which began in March. Westerville Central's softball team continues to inspire, demonstrating resilience and strategic prowess throughout their undefeated run, showcasing the power of teamwork and determination.
