Live Wire Athens, a vibrant music venue and event space in downtown Athens, has undergone significant transformation over the past decade. Initially established by Daniel Robertson Jr. and his family, the venue began as an opportunity to revive their passion for live music. After successfully acquiring the property that once housed New Earth Music Hall, the Robertsons expanded their offerings beyond concerts to include weddings, parties, and community events. Despite diversifying their services, music remains at the heart of Live Wire Athens. The venue has become a cornerstone of the local scene, hosting numerous events each year and fostering strong relationships with musicians like Zachary Thigpen of the Grateful Brothers.

From Savannah to Athens: The Birth of Live Wire

After relocating from Savannah, where the Robertsons had previously managed a music hall, Daniel Robertson Jr. seized an unexpected opportunity in Athens. Within months of moving, he was approached about taking over a local music venue. Recognizing the potential, Robertson and his family quickly moved to acquire and transform the space into what is now Live Wire Athens. This decision marked the beginning of a new chapter for the family, who had always been deeply rooted in the music industry.

Initially, the focus was on creating a premier music venue. However, after operating for about a year and a half, Robertson realized that to ensure long-term success, they needed to expand their business model. "We understood that we had to diversify our offerings," Robertson explained. By leveraging their prime location in downtown Athens, they began exploring additional revenue streams. Today, Live Wire Athens hosts a wide array of events, including weddings and birthday parties, while maintaining its core commitment to live music. This strategic shift allowed the venue to thrive and become an integral part of the community.

A Community Hub and Musical Legacy

Live Wire Athens has not only grown as a business but has also become a beloved fixture in the local community. Hosting approximately 100 to 135 events annually, the venue has made a significant impact on Athens. Over 90% of these events are organized by local groups, further strengthening ties within the city. One notable milestone was the venue's 10th anniversary celebration, which featured performances by the Grateful Brothers and F.O.R., along with culinary delights from Atlanta chef Don Carne.

The Robertsons have built lasting relationships with many artists, particularly with Zachary Thigpen, guitarist and vocalist of the Grateful Brothers. Thigpen’s connection with Live Wire Athens dates back several years, when he first met the Robertsons while working at Guitar Center. "They’re a great family-run business, and it's always a pleasure to perform at Live Wire," Thigpen remarked. The Grateful Brothers have played at the venue almost every year since their formation, highlighting the enduring bond between the band and the venue. This partnership exemplifies how Live Wire Athens has cultivated a supportive environment for both local and visiting musicians, reinforcing its role as a vital cultural hub in Athens.
