Examining Potential Trade Targets for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2024-25 Offseason

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in the midst of a crucial offseason, with offense taking center stage for Ben Cherington. However, the bullpen also requires significant improvement. Entering 2024, the bullpen initially seemed to be a team strength, but injuries and poor performances led to a disappointing unit with a 4.49 ERA, finishing fourth-worst in baseball.

Free Agent Relievers and the Competitive Market

This winter, free agent relievers are abundant, as is typical. But with 30 teams vying for bullpen help, the Pirates may find themselves in bidding wars with other clubs. Winning these battles isn't usually their forte. While exploring the free agent market is essential, the trade market also holds potential. There is a reliever from the Tampa Bay Rays who could pique the Pirates' interest.

Pete Fairbanks - A Potential Closer Option

Despite having his season cut short due to a lat strain, Pete Fairbanks had another strong season in Tampa. In 46 relief appearances, he recorded 23 saves with a 3.57 ERA. Although his strikeouts dipped last season, he still proved to be effective. Traded by the Texas Rangers to the Rays in 2019, Fairbanks has been an anchor ever since. Since 2020, he has a 2.89 ERA, a 2.71 FIP, and 245 strikeouts in 184 innings. He has also recorded 61 saves over this period, with the majority coming in the last two years. Given his experience pitching in late-game situations, Fairbanks would provide the Pirates with a potential closer option if David Bednar's 2024 struggles persist into the next season.

Contract Details and Trade Considerations

Fairbanks is under contract for the 2025 season with a very reasonable salary of $3.67 million. There is also a $7 million club option for 2026 with a $1 million buyout. Trading with the astute Rays is always a challenge due to their strong track record of identifying and developing players. They seem to know when it's time to part with a player to maximize his value. However, Fairbanks is a player that the Pirates should keep an eye on, even if the asking price is as significant as his 6-foot-6 frame. The Pirates need to carefully assess the potential benefits and risks of pursuing a trade for Fairbanks and determine if he would be a valuable addition to their bullpen.
