In Auburn, Maine, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing adaptive sports programs has received an unexpected financial boost. Central Maine Adaptive Sports (CMAS), based at Lost Valley Ski Resort, recently secured a $20,000 donation from a benefactor inspired by his cousin's journey. This generous contribution will enhance the opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage in various sports activities throughout the year. The organization offers a wide range of adaptive sports including sled hockey, skiing, track, kayaking, and cycling, serving approximately 100 adults and children. The funds will significantly support operational costs and help maintain low registration fees, ensuring accessibility for all participants.
The story begins with Cam Macri, who grew up traveling from Massachusetts to western Maine to visit his cousins Zach and Travis. While Zach participated in sports, Travis faced numerous challenges due to cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and legal blindness. Despite these obstacles, Travis found a passion for adaptive skiing and sled hockey through CMAS. Leading the program is Christy Gardner, a disabled Army sergeant and former player for the U.S. Women’s National Sled Hockey team. Her leadership has been instrumental in fostering a sense of independence among participants like Travis.
Cam, now working at PSG Equity, a Boston-based growth equity firm, leveraged an annual giving event to secure funds for CMAS. After presenting the impact of the organization on Travis and others, he was awarded $20,000. This donation not only covers significant operational expenses but also ensures the continuation of vital services for two years. The CMAS community, including board members, coaches, and families, expressed immense gratitude for this support. Travis, now able to enjoy hockey independently, exemplifies the transformative power of these adaptive sports programs.
The generous donation from Cam's efforts has provided a lifeline for CMAS, enabling it to continue offering essential sports programs for individuals with disabilities. The financial assistance will aid in covering crucial costs such as liability insurance and maintaining affordable participation fees. Moreover, this act of kindness may inspire others to contribute their time and resources, further expanding access to adaptive sports for people of all abilities. The future looks brighter for those who can now pursue their athletic passions without financial barriers.
