Watching Sunday's game with my boys was an exhilarating experience. My 14-year-old, in a moment of hyperbole after the third touchdown drive, declared "Bo Nix is a GOAT". Of course, he's just a youngster with a vivid imagination. But his words sparked an interesting conversation. We reminded him that the title of GOAT is reserved for a select few. However, he then said something quite wise. He mentioned that he was no longer nervous watching our offense. Instead, he was excited and confident that Nix would make good passes, the receivers would catch them, and we would score. And I couldn't agree more.
Last Season's Struggles and This Season's Upturn
Last season was a rollercoaster. There was that magical stretch of five wins that pulled us out of the depths of football hell and gave us hope for better days ahead. But no one could have predicted that the wins would keep coming. In the end, it all came crashing down. Thankfully, that chapter is now behind us.This season, however, is a different story. The offense is scoring in bunches and in various ways with different players. The quarterback is spreading the ball around, and the running game has gained significant momentum. The defense is making big plays, not just stops. They have multiple sacks, interceptions, batted passes, and tackles for a loss. Special teams? It's been a sight to behold. Watching players down punts inside the five so often is truly remarkable. It's fun to see the young players improving and all the players getting excited, especially behind a rookie quarterback. There are still growing pains, and they won't disappear overnight. But the progress is evident, and any "rookie mistakes" are manageable. The potential is clear, and the optimism is real. The Coach's Perspective
Sean Payton reminded the media on Monday not to get too carried away with the young QB. He isn't ready for the Hall of Fame just yet. "Let's not send this kid to Canton quite yet. We're in the middle of the season, and he's playing well. I'm excited," the coach said. "But the film also shows a few things that I wanted to address with him."However, Payton loves how Nix prepares and his enthusiasm for the game. "I love the way he comes to work. His enthusiasm is naturally contagious. I think he's a winner," Payton added. "You can see it in real time just like we do. I'm really encouraged by his progress."Nix's Record-Breaking Performance
With Nix's four touchdown passes on Sunday, he tied the rookie record for the most passing touchdowns with former Denver Broncos quarterback Marlin Briscoe. Payton acknowledged the milestone but reminded everyone that the only record that truly matters is the number of wins. "I think the most important thing is this—and I mean this because you guys spend a lot of time with [Nix]—it's getting the win. Our job is to win each week, week after week," Payton said. He believes that Nix and the offense share the same goal. "It's an unselfish group, and they're playing great team football."The Team's Belief
The thing that Payton believes the most is exactly what my son believes—the team always has a chance. "You always believe you're in each game. You always believe—even if you fall behind—you're in the game," Payton said. "The opposite can be very difficult."We've been through difficult times before.
