Organized in partnership with the Pūʻā Foundation and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu, this event provided a much-needed opportunity for families to bond and create lasting memories.

The courtyard of Maunawili Cottage transformed into a festive haven where laughter and creativity flourished. Families engaged in a variety of engaging activities that catered to both adults and children. Puppet shows entertained the young ones while arts and crafts stations allowed parents and kids to collaborate on handmade treasures. These moments were not just about fun; they symbolized the power of connection and the importance of nurturing relationships even in challenging circumstances.The presence of Santa added an extra layer of magic to the day. Approximately 30 individuals from the Pūʻā Foundation and 12 inmates lent their time and energy to make the day special. Volunteers facilitated games, distributed treats, and offered assistance wherever needed, embodying the spirit of generosity and compassion.The event also saw the participation of students from Sacred Hearts Academy, who performed hula dances that captivated the audience. Bishop Larry Silva of the Diocese of Honolulu graced the gathering with his presence, delivering a heartfelt blessing that resonated deeply with everyone present. The Sisters of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts joined in the festivities, singing songs that filled the air with melodies of hope and unity.

Building Bridges Between Institutions and Communities

For over two decades, the Diocese of Honolulu has partnered with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DCR) to facilitate events like these. This longstanding collaboration underscores the commitment to helping incarcerated mothers maintain strong bonds with their children. DCR Director Tommy Johnson expressed his gratitude to all those involved, acknowledging the critical role they played in making the event a success. “We couldn’t have done this without them,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and community support.The event concluded with each child and caregiver leaving with gifts, courtesy of generous donations from various community partners. WCCC Warden Ione “Noni” Guillonta reflected on the significance of such gatherings, stating, “Events like this are crucial for mothers to sustain their connections with their children.” The Star Light, Star Bright Kids’ Day event marked the culmination of six annual celebrations, each one fostering a sense of belonging and love among families.
