West Jordan witnessed a festive atmosphere as hundreds of teenagers got a taste of Christmas early. Alongside volunteer chaperones, they embarked on a shopping spree at Walmart in South Jordan, each with a generous $150 to spend on themselves or their families. This heartwarming event was made possible by the Jordan Education Foundation's Christmas for Kids program, which gathers funds throughout the year from donors and local businesses.
Helping the Community and Recognizing Importance
Kit Bate, a board member of the Jordan Education Foundation and the chairman of Christmas for Kids, emphasized the significance of the program. "It's about giving back to the community and providing a positive experience. During this time of year, especially for kids who may not have much, it's crucial to show them that they are recognized and important. If we can offer them something they wouldn't have otherwise, it makes a world of difference," said Bate.Refugee Students and Their Needs
According to Bate, an interesting fact is that 40% of refugees in Utah are enrolled in the Jordan School District. This is why some of the purchases made today weren't just toys or electronics. "Often, these kids just need basic necessities like pillows or food. They are buying Christmas dinner for their families to ensure they have a special meal during the holiday season," explained Bate.Impact on Teenagers' Lives
For these teenagers, the shopping spree was more than just a financial boost. It was a chance to feel valued and part of a community. One student shared, "I've never had this much money to spend on my family before. It makes me feel really good to be able to give them something special. I'm grateful for this opportunity." Another student added, "It's not just about the gifts; it's about the feeling of being cared for and included."Building a Stronger Community
The Christmas for Kids program not only benefits the individual students but also contributes to the overall strength of the community. As Bate said, "When we come together to help these kids, we are building a better future for everyone. It shows that we are a united community that looks out for one another." This event serves as a reminder of the power of kindness and generosity during the holiday season.
