Makkos will spearhead comedy development and oversee current series programming across Disney Entertainment Television’s ABC and Hulu platforms. This includes live-action comedy, adult animation, and stand-up specials. Her extensive experience in both broadcast and streaming positions her uniquely to revitalize these divisions.
The restructuring of ABC and Hulu Originals scripted teams under Simran Sethi, president of Scripted Programming, has created dual leadership roles in drama and comedy. Makkos joins Jordan Helman, who heads drama, with both executives reporting directly to Sethi. This reorganization aims to streamline operations and enhance creative synergy between the two platforms.
Makkos’ career trajectory reflects a deep commitment to shaping the comedy genre. Since August, rumors have circulated about her potential move to Disney, initially as a replacement for Billy Rosenberg, who stepped down from his role as Hulu’s head of comedy in May. The speculation intensified following the October restructuring, which saw Erin Wehrenberg leave her position as ABC Head of Comedy, creating an opportunity for Makkos to step into this critical role.
With the top comedy post at Hulu vacant for eight months and the one at ABC open for three and a half, Makkos faces an immediate challenge upon starting next week. One of her first tasks will likely involve reviewing ABC’s comedy development slate to identify potential pilots for the 2025-26 season. Sethi praised Makkos for her breadth of experience and success in developing culturally impactful comedies, underscoring her significance to the team.
Makkos was among the first programming executives hired at Max in 2019, playing a crucial role in the platform’s launch as HBO Max the following year. She expanded her responsibilities in 2021 by overseeing Adult Swim’s adult animation development, further enriching the brand’s offerings. Despite the 2022 restructuring that consolidated HBO and Max operations, Makkos remained a key figure, reporting to Amy Gravitt on the Max side.
Her tenure at Max yielded several notable achievements, including the Emmy-winning series "Hacks," Mindy Kaling’s "The Sex Lives of College Girls," and the "Sex and the City" revival "And Just Like That…" Additionally, she introduced stand-up specials featuring Chelsea Handler and Marlon Wayans, along with adult animation hits like "The Prince" and "Creature Commandos." These projects highlight her ability to foster innovative and diverse content.
Prior to joining Max, Makkos spent 13 years at Fox Broadcasting, where she ascended to EVP of Comedy Programming and Development. During her time there, she developed iconic shows such as "Bob’s Burgers," "Family Guy," "New Girl," "The Mindy Project," and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Her contributions significantly influenced the network’s lineup and solidified its reputation for quality comedy programming.
Makkos expressed excitement about joining Disney Entertainment Television, praising Craig Erwich, Simran Sethi, and their teams for driving excellence in television. She looks forward to collaborating with talented leaders and creative voices behind beloved brands, setting the stage for a promising future in comedy development.
