Northwest Missouri State University's Department of Fine and Performing Arts is set to host its annual jazz festival, an event that promises to captivate audiences with vibrant performances. This year’s edition, scheduled for Friday, February 21, will showcase the talents of over 20 student ensembles from neighboring states. The highlight of the day will be the Doug Talley Quartet, a renowned jazz group known for its dynamic performances. All events are free and open to the public, making it an accessible experience for everyone. The festival will span from morning until evening, featuring multiple venues on campus where attendees can enjoy a variety of jazz styles.

The festival kicks off early in the morning with performances beginning at 8 am. Both the Charles Johnson Theater and Mary Linn Auditorium will serve as stages for these musical acts. One of the first groups to take the stage will be the Maryville High School Jazz Band, performing at the Charles Johnson Theater shortly after the opening. Throughout the day, various middle school and high school ensembles from Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri will present their interpretations of jazz classics. These young musicians represent the future of jazz, showcasing their skills and passion for the genre.

A significant moment of the festival will occur at noon when the Doug Talley Quartet takes the stage alongside the Northwest Jazz Ensemble. Formed in 1995, this quartet has made a name for itself across the Midwest, performing at numerous festivals, concerts, and educational institutions. Each member of the quartet contributes not only through performance but also by composing and arranging music, adding depth to their repertoire. Following their performance, the quartet will lead a clinic focused on jazz improvisation, offering valuable insights into this essential aspect of jazz performance. This session, starting at 1 pm, aims to inspire both aspiring musicians and seasoned performers alike.

Saxophonist Doug Talley, a prominent figure in the Midwest jazz scene, brings extensive experience to the festival. Having collaborated with many notable jazz artists, Talley’s influence extends beyond performance to education. His discography includes several recordings with different ensembles, reflecting his versatility and dedication to jazz. The Doug Talley Quartet’s CDs, including titles such as "Town Topic" and "Night and Day," have garnered acclaim for their unique sound and composition.

As the day draws to a close, the Northwest Jazz Ensemble will deliver a closing performance at 5 pm, bringing the festival to a memorable end. This annual event not only celebrates the rich tradition of jazz but also fosters a community of musicians and enthusiasts. Through its engaging performances and educational opportunities, the Northwest Jazz Festival continues to thrive as a cornerstone of cultural expression on campus.
