Louisville basketball faced a significant challenge in its first game under new head coach Pat Kelsey, suffering a 22-point loss to then-No. 12 Tennessee. Now, the Cardinals (1-1) are back at the KFC Yum! Center, eager to secure a much-needed bounce-back win against crosstown rival Bellarmine (0-4), who is still in search of their first victory of the season. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.Coach Kelsey's Focus
During the nearly two-week break, U of L spent the majority of the time in "preseason mode," working on all aspects of their system. With next week's trip to the Bahamas for the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis on the horizon, the coach emphasized the importance of consistency in both effort and execution against the Knights. "They knew there were a lot of things we had to improve on and we had to clean up," he said. "I loved our mentality and our approach."
Opponent Analysis
Led by longtime coach Scott Davenport, Bellarmine is looking to avoid a 0-5 start for the first time since the 2021-22 season. Despite having only one starter and one player who appeared in all 31 games from last season, the Knights present a variety of challenges. "Their record is not indicative of the caliber of the team that they have," Kelsey said. "They present a lot of problems: positional size, a lot of shooting (and) very good skill."
Bellarmine's competition this season hasn't been as tough as in previous years. They have faced VCU, VMI, Southern Indiana, and Marshall. These opponents have provided a different level of competition compared to the top-40 teams they faced in the past.
