A compelling new theatrical production, "Hey! I Heard You’re Black," is set to premiere at the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) Loft on March 5th. This 90-minute play offers a series of interconnected vignettes that delve into the daily lives and experiences of Black Americans. The work has evolved from its origins as a single monologue titled "Busted Tailight" accepted at Ohio's Columbus Black Theatre Festival. Now fully realized, it weaves together narratives through monologues and scenes, highlighting both personal and communal stories that often go untold.
The playwright behind this poignant piece is Alicia Whavers, an accomplished actor, singer, and writer hailing from Newark. Her creation aims to shed light on the subtle yet profound realities faced by Black couples, acquaintances, neighbors, and colleagues. A key figure in the drama is Nella, a “Holla Hotline” specialist who serves as a connecting thread among the various characters. Through these diverse perspectives, Whavers crafts a vivid tapestry of Black American life.
The journey of "Hey! I Heard You’re Black" includes a previous staging at the NJPAC Education Arts Center during the North To Shore Festival grant event in summer 2024, as well as performances at Studio Players in Montclair. Each iteration has enriched the narrative, bringing depth and authenticity to the storytelling. The cast comprises seasoned performers Steven Michael Martin, Emily Miller, Melissa Searcy, Dan Waldron, and Angelle Whavers, with Martin participating courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association.
This production promises to offer audiences an intimate glimpse into the multifaceted experiences of Black Americans. By focusing on everyday moments, Whavers invites viewers to reflect on the nuanced aspects of life often overlooked in mainstream media. The play underscores the importance of listening to and understanding these stories, fostering greater empathy and awareness within the community.
