A legendary figure in the entertainment industry has left an indelible mark on Hollywood. Eric Weissmann, a veteran attorney who dedicated over five decades to representing some of the most iconic names in film and television, passed away peacefully on December 15th at the age of 94. His granddaughter shared this news with The Hollywood Reporter.
Weissmann's illustrious career was marked by his representation of numerous celebrated artists. Among his clientele were Rita Hayworth, Robert Altman, Elizabeth Taylor, Gene Wilder, David Carradine, Keith Carradine, Peter Bogdanovich, Robert Aldrich, Paul Mazursky, and Mark Rydell. His expertise extended beyond legal counsel; he played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of these luminaries. In 2012, Weissmann established his own practice after serving as a senior partner at Weissmann Wolff Bergman Coleman Grodin for many years. This move came shortly after the firm merged with Weintraub Genshlea Chediak Tobin & Tobin, signaling the end of an era for one of Hollywood's prominent entertainment law firms since the early 1980s.
Born in Zurich in 1930, Weissmann and his family fled Europe in 1940, eventually settling in Los Angeles via Mexico City. His professional journey included significant positions such as head of worldwide business affairs at Warner Bros. and partner at Kaplan Livingston Goodwin Berkowitz & Selvin before founding Weissmann Wolff. Weissmann's contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Beverly Hills Bar Association's Entertainment Lawyer of the Year award in 2010 and the Anti-Defamation League's Distinguished Entertainment Leadership Award. He also imparted his wisdom through lectures at prestigious institutions like Harvard, Yale, and the American Film Institute, as well as teaching at USC and Sherwood Oaks Experimental College.
