Tennessee showcases some impressive stats. Zakai Zeigler leads in points with 15.5 PPG, boasting a remarkable 54.1 FG% and 47.6 3PT%. Felix Okpara is dominant on the boards, averaging 6.5 RPG, with 4 DRPG and 2.5 ORPG. In terms of assists, Zakai Zeigler takes the lead with 7.8 APG, contributing 4.5 TOPG and playing an average of 31.8 minutes per game. Virginia, on the other hand, has Isaac McNeely as their top scorer with 16 PPG, shooting an impressive 64 FG% and 64.7 3PT%. Jacob Cofie is a force on the rebounds, averaging 7.7 RPG, with 6.3 DRPG and 1.3 ORPG. Blake Buchanan contributes 2.7 APG, 0.7 TOPG, and plays 22 minutes per game.
The latest games have seen Tennessee on a winning streak. They defeated Austin Peay 103-68, Montana 92-57, won at Louisville 77-55, and also beat Gardner-Webb 80-64. Virginia has also had their share of victories, winning against Villanova (Baltimore) 70-60, Coppin State 62-45, and Campbell 65-56.
Tennessee basketball is set to face its first of what is expected to be two solid tests on Thursday night. Virginia has a new (interim) coach following Tony Bennett's departure shortly before the season began, but it's the same Cavaliers team that we're familiar with. The Hoos are known for their strong defense and will likely shorten the game by implementing the pack line defense. Offensively, however, they have their limitations. The key for Tennessee is to neutralize Isaac McKneely, the elite shooter and Virginia's best scorer. Expect a heavy focus on Jahmai Mashack to guard him. But the real telltale sign will be how successful Tennessee's offense is against Virginia. KenPom predicts that Tennessee will only score 70 points. If the Vols can make some shots and score in the upper 70s, it will be another positive sign for an offense that has been encouraging so far this season. I anticipate a close battle, but Tennessee has the potential to come out on top with a score of 74-62.
