Tennessee coach Josh Heupel firmly believes that SEC teams play at a higher level when it comes to "real venues and real road games." This stance comes as the Vols find themselves ranked No. 11 in the updated CFP rankings, with four SEC teams currently in the field but only No. 3 Texas making the top six. The rest of the SEC contenders, including No. 7 Alabama, No. 9 Georgia, and No. 10 Ole Miss, have been penalized by their head-to-head matchups and identical 8-2 records.
SEC's Dominance in National Titles
SEC teams have a remarkable track record, having won four of the past five national titles. This season, the conference expanded to 16 teams with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma. Coach Heupel emphasizes that in this era of college football, the SEC is the deepest from top to bottom. Looking at the schedules and outcomes, it's clear that competing within the SEC is extremely difficult. 1: The SEC's strength is evident in the tough road environments that teams face. When playing on the road in this league, it's not just about the opponent; it's about the electric atmospheres and the challenges presented. As Heupel said, "When you go play road games in this league, they're real venues, real road games. For us, they've been at night. You're going to get electric atmospheres. It makes it as difficult as it can be on the road, let alone the opponent that you're playing." 2: This is further highlighted by the fact that SEC teams have to contend with each other on a regular basis. Road losses to other SEC teams have weakened the resumes of some of the league's top playoff contenders compared to Big Ten teams, ACC frontrunner Miami, and Notre Dame. For example, Tennessee lost at Georgia and Arkansas, while Alabama lost at Tennessee and Vanderbilt, and Georgia lost at Alabama and Ole Miss.VOLS IN PLAYOFF? Why Tennessee Fell Behind Alabama in CFP Rankings
Last week, Tennessee suffered a 31-17 loss at Georgia, extending the Bulldogs' home winning streak to 29 games. The Vols also had a win at Oklahoma and a loss at Arkansas, along with a win over NC State in a neutral site game in Charlotte. In contrast, other top teams in the CFP rankings have had more lopsided road wins. No. 5 Indiana has wins over UCLA, Northwestern, and Michigan State, while No. 4 Penn State has wins over West Virginia, Southern Cal, Wisconsin, and Purdue. No. 6 Notre Dame has wins over Texas A&M and Purdue, and No. 8 Miami has wins over Florida, South Florida, California, and Louisville. 1: These road wins have given other teams a stronger resume and have contributed to Tennessee falling behind in the CFP rankings. However, Coach Heupel remains focused on what his team can control. He emphasizes that they can't worry about the outcomes of other games or their impact on the rankings. "We have no control over the rankings. There's still a lot of football to be played. We can't control those things," he said. "We can control our preparation, how we practice, how we get better and how we get ready to go play good football." 2: The Vols have two more games left in the regular season, playing UTEP on Saturday and at Vanderbilt on Nov. 30. Heupel hopes that his team can get a break and make it into the 12-team bracket. The CFP rankings will be updated each Tuesday for the next two weeks, and the final field will be announced on Dec. 8.
