In a nail-biting finish, the Mililani Trojans secured their fourth consecutive appearance in the Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) Division I boys basketball championship. The game against defending champions Leilehua saw Taye Marxen clinch victory with two crucial free throws in the final moments. Despite 28 lead changes throughout the match, Mililani managed to edge out a tense 61-60 win at McKinley High School on Monday night. This sets up an exciting showdown with top-seeded Kailua on Wednesday evening.

The path to victory was paved by resilience and strategic plays. Coach Garrett Gabriel emphasized the importance of perseverance, noting that reaching the championship required both skill and a bit of luck. Roman Gabriel led the scoring for Mililani with 23 points, showcasing his prowess on the court. However, it was Marxen’s decisive free throws that ultimately tipped the scales. Known more for his defensive skills, Marxen stepped up in a critical moment, converting two improbable shots to give his team the lead.

The final seconds were filled with tension as Mililani employed tactical fouls to reduce the clock to just 3.8 seconds for Leilehua. With the Mules' last attempt narrowly missing the mark, the Trojans erupted in celebration. Leilehua, who had previously defeated Mililani in a close 51-50 game during the regular season, fell short this time around. Coach Chad Townsend acknowledged Mililani's superior execution in the final quarter, particularly praising their clutch three-pointers.

Mililani’s success was also bolstered by key contributions from Tui Tukimaka, who hit three crucial three-pointers, and LeCedric Brown, who took a pivotal charge late in the game despite having four fouls. Meanwhile, Leilehua’s Tyree Wilson put up a valiant effort with 20 points and 10 rebounds but couldn't guide his team to victory.

In the first semifinal, Kailua emerged victorious over Moanalua with a score of 67-56. Guard Maddox Pung delivered a career-high 30 points, dominating the midrange and effectively neutralizing Moanalua’s comeback attempts. Coach Wally Marciel praised Pung’s leadership and adaptability, highlighting his ability to take control when it mattered most. Kailua’s relentless offensive rebounding and second-chance points proved decisive, setting them up for their first D-I title game appearance in decades.
