United Airlines: Transforming Christmas with Magical "Fantasy Flights"

Honolulu: A Christmas Miracle Unfolds

This week in Honolulu, a "Fantasy Flight" took place, bringing smiles to those in need. The pilot of flight 3894 announced over the intercom, "Santa has invited us to Christmas Island and all his elves are waiting there on the ground for us." It was a short flight that soared past Maui only to loop back and land where it started. But upon exiting the aircraft, the children were transported to "Christmas Island," the home of the "North Pole."More than 150 United staff and volunteers transformed a festive hanger at the airport into a North Pole-like setting. The children received presents from their Christmas wish lists, played games, participated in activities, and enjoyed a nice meal with their families. For some, it was a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Supporting Families in Need

The organization HUGS Hawaii, which provides support for families with children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses, partnered with United for this event. Alex Wereszczynskyj, the development director at HUGS Hawaii, told USA Today that many of the families are financially challenged due to medical bills. This "Fantasy Flight" fills in that gap, giving these families a chance to experience something special.Lena Wong, a United customer service agent with seven years of experience on "Fantasy Flights," said many of the kids have never been on a plane before. They are amazed by the ride and show incredible strength. Tony Mailo, his wife Leslie Ann, and their son Amadeus, who was diagnosed with cancer, were invited on the flight. Leslie Ann described it as "amazing" and "magical," praising the detailed decor.

Global Reach of "Fantasy Flights"

This month, "Fantasy Flights" will take off from a dozen cities around the globe: Chicago, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Houston, Virginia, Tokyo, Guam, and London. United is spreading holiday cheer far and wide, making a difference in the lives of children and families in need. The logistics behind these flights are extensive, with many volunteers and man hours dedicated to making them a reality. United is fortunate to have a team of wonderful volunteers who put in a lot of time and their own money to bring this event together. It is a true testament to the power of Christmas and the kindness of others.
