Every December, the small town of Sequim transforms into a hub of generosity and community spirit. The Toys for Sequim Kids event, organized by dedicated volunteers, brings together local residents to ensure that no child goes without gifts during the holiday season. This heartwarming initiative not only brightens the lives of hundreds of children but also strengthens the bonds within the community.
Empowering Generosity, Enriching Lives
The Spirit of Giving in Action
The annual toy drive is more than just an event; it's a testament to the unwavering commitment of Sequim's residents to uplift their neighbors. Kathy Suta, co-organizer and president of Sequim Community Aid, described the experience as "joyous" for both families and volunteers. Last year, she was so moved by the event that she felt its positive impact for days afterward. This year, the toy drive provided presents for 427 children from 134 families within the Sequim School District boundaries. The number of beneficiaries remained consistent with the previous year, where approximately 450 children received gifts. The success of this endeavor relies on the tireless efforts of around 30 volunteer "elves," who assist families in selecting and packaging gifts. A Community-Wide Effort
The toy drive is a collaborative effort that engages various sectors of the community. Donation trees and boxes are strategically placed at numerous locations, including Anytime Fitness, The Co-Op Farm & Garden, Sequim Valley Foursquare Church, Sequim Electronics/Radio Shack, and the YMCA of Sequim. These collection points allow residents to conveniently contribute toys, blankets, games, clothes, and other items. One of the most significant contributors is Murrey’s Olympic Disposal, whose employees donated 27 bicycles that were raffled off to children. Other businesses like Big 5, Costco, Safeway, Swain’s General Store, and Walmart also played pivotal roles by donating generously. The involvement of these establishments underscores the importance of corporate social responsibility and community engagement.Handcrafted Gifts and Personal Touches
Beyond commercial donations, the event benefits from the creativity and dedication of local artisans. Quilters from Project Linus and the Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club handcrafted over 420 quilts and blankets, adding a personal touch to the gifts. Blue Sky Realty Sequim contributed new blankets and coats, ensuring that children stay warm during the colder months. The Sequim Prairie Garden Club, Sequim Valley Car Club, and Olympic Peninsula Doll Club also chipped in with monetary donations, gift cards, and toys. These contributions highlight the diverse ways in which individuals and organizations can come together to support a common cause.Santa's Brigade and Year-Round Support
In early December, Santa’s Toy and Food Brigade traversed Sequim, collecting a busload of toys and food along with over $4,000 in donations. This amount was split between Community Aid and the Sequim Food Bank, further extending the reach of charitable efforts. While Toys for Sequim Kids is a seasonal highlight, Sequim Community Aid works year-round to provide utility and rent assistance to residents. As winter approaches, the need for support intensifies due to rising heating costs. To contribute or seek assistance, residents can contact Sequim Community Aid at 360-681-3731 or mail donations to P.O. Box 1591, Sequim, WA, 98382.Extending Hours for Greater Impact
Recognizing that not all families can visit during regular hours, organizers extended the event's operating time. This adjustment allowed an additional 20 families to participate, ensuring that more children could receive gifts. The flexibility and responsiveness of the organizers demonstrate their commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.A Legacy of Generosity
The success of Toys for Sequim Kids is built on decades of tradition and unwavering support from the community. From the initial setup to the final distribution, every aspect of the event reflects the collective effort and goodwill of Sequim's residents. As the holiday season approaches, this annual tradition continues to inspire and unite the community, reminding everyone of the true meaning of giving.
