William Zepeda: Keeping Options Open for the Next Fight

William Zepeda made a significant statement last Saturday, leaving his next fight options wide open. It might not be against the WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson. After his victory over Tevin Farmer, Zepeda emphasized that he is being "mentioned" by the champions, specifically referring to Gervonta Davis.

Zepeda Wants The Big Tuna

The "big tuna" here is Tank, Gervonta Davis, the king of the 135-pound division and the face of boxing in North America. Zepeda is prepared for whatever comes next. He stated, "I'm ready for whatever is coming. Many of the champions want to fight me. It's very clear that the Shakur fight could probably be next. I'm just ready for whoever is next." While Zepeda's win over Farmer cracked the Shakur code, fighting the New Jersey native doesn't hold much value as he isn't popular enough. Zepeda dominated Farmer with a blitzkrieg approach, using volume to his advantage. His comment about "many" champions wanting to fight him shows that he doesn't need Shakur, whose WBC belt was won in a subpar performance against Edwin De Los Santos last November and has led to his career being ridiculed.

Financially, Tank The Better Option

WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis would be a more lucrative option for Zepeda financially. After his title defense against Lamont Roach on December 14th, the Baltimore native may consider Zepeda. Tank needs a good opponent to boost PPV buys, and Zepeda is the perfect candidate. As a Mexican fighter, a fight between him and Tank Davis would generate excellent pay-per-view numbers. The money Zepeda can make from fighting Tank is likely to be much higher than from fighting Shakur, who has no fanbase outside of Newark, New Jersey. This fight would be more entertaining for the fans compared to Shakur being the option. Shakur is a runner and won't let Zepeda crank up his high-volume offense like he did against Tevin Farmer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Farmer With Sour Grapes

Tevin Farmer expressed his views to Boxing King Media. He said, "He was good. I could see that the guys he was fighting before me, like all the C minus and D minus, I could see why he could stop those dudes. He definitely possesses the output to stop those dudes." Farmer added, "The dudes that are just coming up and aren't mentally strong, the dudes that don't have the experience, I could see how he stopped all those dudes. I want to see how he does when he keeps moving up because the tougher the opponents you get, the harder it gets to stop people." Farmer didn't mention specific "tougher opponents" as there aren't many in the lightweight division that can withstand Zepeda's punches. Zepeda has the potential to beat top fighters like Raymond Muratalla, Keyshawn Savis, Abdullah Mason, Denys Berinchyk, Edwin De Los Santos, and Floyd Schofield. Farmer further said, "So, I could see how he stops a lot of dudes coming up. I want to see how he does against other elites, whether he continues stopping them or not. I'm not going to say a rematch for me because I know that's not happening. Golden Boy isn't crazy. Most people thought I won. I'm not going to sit here and cry about it."
