Baltimore Orioles Secure Pitcher Shane Baz with Multi-Year Deal

The Baltimore Orioles have reportedly secured right-handed pitcher Shane Baz with a significant five-year, $68 million contract extension. This move signals a strong commitment from the Orioles to bolster their pitching rotation, integrating Baz, who was recently acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays.

Reports indicate that the agreement is on the cusp of being finalized, with the expectation that Baz will formally sign the deal prior to his highly anticipated debut for the Orioles. This pivotal first appearance is scheduled to take place at Camden Yards this Sunday, where the Orioles are set to face off against the Minnesota Twins.

Baz, at 26 years old, joined the Baltimore organization in December as part of a trade deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Orioles sent a package of prospects to the Rays, which included catcher Caden Bodine, right-hander Michael Forret, and outfielders Slater de Brun and Austin Overn. Additionally, Baltimore relinquished a competitive balance draft pick in the late first round of the 2026 draft, specifically the 31st overall selection, highlighting the value they placed on acquiring Baz.

During his tenure with the Tampa Bay Rays, Baz's performance showed flashes of potential. In the previous season, he recorded a 10-12 win-loss record with an earned run average of 4.87 across 31 starts. Over his four seasons with the Rays, the former 12th overall draft pick from 2017 accumulated a career record of 17-17 with a 4.25 ERA over 54 starts, demonstrating his experience and capability on the mound. The prospects traded for Baz also have notable backgrounds; Bodine was the 30th overall pick in the 2025 draft out of Coastal Carolina, while de Brun was the 37th overall pick from high school. Forret was a 14th-round pick in 2023, and Overn was a third-round selection in 2024, with both having reached Double-A Chesapeake last season.

This impending contract extension marks a significant strategic investment for the Baltimore Orioles, as they aim to solidify their pitching staff with a proven talent like Shane Baz. The substantial financial commitment underscores their belief in his ability to contribute meaningfully to the team's future success, positioning him as a key component of their competitive aspirations in the league.
