Hidalgo's Historic Steal Record Reimagines NCAA Legacy

From her debut with Notre Dame, Hannah Hidalgo quickly distinguished herself as a rising star in collegiate basketball. Her freshman season saw her average an impressive 22.6 points per game, solidifying her status as one of the sport's top young talents. Beyond her scoring ability, Hidalgo's defensive skills were particularly noteworthy, as she led the ACC in steals per game, earning her the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award in her inaugural year.

Hidalgo's defensive prowess continued to evolve, leading to a historic achievement on Friday when she shattered the NCAA's single-season steals record. This remarkable feat occurred during the first quarter of a game against Vanderbilt, where she recorded four steals, bringing her season total to 193 and eclipsing the previous record. Her record-breaking steal was notably effortless, capitalizing on an opponent's misdirected pass. This accomplishment places her above Chastadie Barrs of Lamar University, who set the prior record of 192 steals in 2019. Barrs herself was a dominant force, holding the career steals record in women's NCAA history with 649 over 122 games, having previously tied the single-season record of 191 in an earlier year, a mark originally set by Natalie White of Florida A&M in the 1994-95 season.

With the single-season record now in her possession, Hidalgo is poised to challenge Barrs' career steals record. She is currently ahead of Barrs' pace, having accumulated more steals in her first three seasons than Barrs did at Lamar. To claim the all-time career leader title, Hidalgo will need another outstanding senior season. A significant advantage for Hidalgo is Notre Dame's consistent presence in the NCAA tournament, which typically allows her to play more games per season, contrasting with Barrs' career, which saw fewer games due to Lamar not reaching the tournament. Hidalgo has already played 101 games across her first three seasons, consistently exceeding 31 games annually, thereby increasing her opportunities to further rewrite the NCAA record books.

Hannah Hidalgo's journey is a testament to unwavering dedication and relentless effort, showcasing how continuous improvement and strategic participation in high-level competition can lead to monumental achievements. Her pursuit of excellence not only elevates her own standing but also inspires future generations to push boundaries and strive for greatness in their respective fields.
