In a tense soccer match held at Children's Health Stadium in Prosper, Texas, on Friday, March 27, 2026, Plano West emerged victorious over Southlake Carroll with a 3-2 scoreline in a Class 6A Division II Region II semifinal. The winning goal came with just 2 minutes and 38 seconds left in the second overtime period, courtesy of Orlando Simancas. Simancas's header, a rebound from a corner kick delivered by Matt Kent, found the back of the net after a period of intense pressure from Plano West.

Earlier in the second overtime, Simancas had already netted an equalizer, also from a rebound originating from a Kent corner kick, demonstrating Plano West's relentless offensive push. Head coach Clint Cobb later revealed a strategic formation change after Carroll took the lead, a move he believed caught the opponents off guard. “We changed our formation after Carroll scored and did not think they had seen or were ready for the change,” Cobb stated. “After tying it we went back to our normal formation.”

Southlake Carroll had briefly taken the lead with 5 minutes and 24 seconds left in the first overtime when John Skiermont scored. Despite falling behind, Cobb urged his team to remain calm, citing past comebacks. The first half saw early action, with Max Kent scoring for Plano West. Carroll (16-0-9) responded with a goal from Drew Stitzel, assisted by Skiermont, leveling the score at 22:30 in the first half. Plano West (17-5-1) now prepares to face Jesuit in the regional final.

This thrilling match underscores the unpredictable nature of high-stakes soccer. It highlights the importance of strategic adaptability and mental fortitude when facing adversity. Plano West's ability to adjust their gameplay and maintain composure under pressure ultimately led them to triumph. This victory serves as a powerful reminder that in sports, perseverance and a well-timed strategic shift can be the key to overcoming formidable challenges and securing success.
