The 12- Team College Football Playoff and the 70 Other Bowl Teams

Nov 19, 2024 at 12:55 PM
While the 12-team College Football Playoff field takes center stage these last three weeks, it's important to remember that there are 70 other teams that will also be participating in bowl games this winter. South Carolina, despite having three losses, is a likely candidate for the Citrus Bowl, which has the first pick among the SEC's non-Playoff teams. Their fans are likely to be more excited than those of Tennessee if the Vols don't make the cut. Texas A&M (if it loses to Texas) and LSU seem like logical choices for the ReliaQuest and Gator Bowls, respectively.

As One of the Pac-12's Legacy Bowls

The Alamo Bowl could potentially pit two current Big 12 teams if one is Colorado or Arizona State. Currently, BYU is set to play, but if the Sun Devils win this week, they could replace the Cougars. Last season, the Holiday Bowl thought it had Clemson lined up until Florida State's CFP snub caused a last-minute domino effect. This year, the Tigers are headed to San Diego to face Washington.Florida, which has struggled this season, is looking to become bowl-eligible for the first time. A 6-6 Gators team would likely fall below most SEC bowls, making the Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa a natural landing spot. We've chosen North Carolina as their opponent. It's important to note that most non-CFP bowls do not have to select teams in order of conference standings.
