The 2026 Deseret News Boys Volleyball Players of the Year share a defining characteristic: an innate ability to perform under duress. These five individuals showcased exceptional skill, whether through powerful offense or steadfast defense, guiding their teams to the pinnacle of state competition. Four of these standout athletes ultimately clinched championship titles, solidifying their status as top performers.
Among the honorees, JJ Faiivae of Bingham, a junior, earned the 6A Player of the Year title. Faiivae's versatility was a key factor in his team's success, as he adeptly switched between outside hitter, opposite hitter, and middle blocker roles. His impressive statistics included 279 kills and a .338 hitting percentage, complemented by strong defensive play with 68 blocks and 25 aces. Bingham coach Ben Chamberlain praised Faiivae's adaptability and willingness to integrate feedback, anticipating a bright future for him in collegiate volleyball. In the 5A category, Landon Chism of Bountiful, a senior, was recognized for his transformative impact. Initially a setter, Chism's shift to outside hitter after an early-season loss proved instrumental, helping his team secure the 5A championship. His season concluded with 215 kills, 514 assists, 178 digs, 53 aces, and 37 blocks, reflecting his comprehensive contributions. His coach, Sarah Chism, lauded his leadership, consistency, and ability to deliver in critical moments.
Adam Maya, a senior from Mountain View, was named the 4A Player of the Year, distinguishing himself as an exceptional setter. His remarkable 888 assists were central to Mountain View's 4A state title victory, a significant milestone for the team that participated in the first UHSAA-sanctioned boys volleyball match in 2024. Coach Jon Fairbanks commended Maya's strategic ball distribution, his capacity to exploit mismatches, and his leadership in orchestrating a high-tempo offense. Beyond setting, Maya contributed 41 aces, 123 digs, and 27 blocks. In the 3A division, Morgan's senior opposite hitter, Kevin Wangsgard, earned Player of the Year honors for his formidable offensive power. Leading his team to a second consecutive state title, Wangsgard recorded 21 kills with a .377 hitting percentage in the championship match. His season total reached 427 kills, alongside 121 blocks and a 3A-leading 71 aces. Coach Kyle Komenda highlighted Wangsgard's physical gifts and his growth as a leader, especially during the team's mid-season resurgence. Finally, Elijah Johnson, a senior outside hitter from Salt Lake Academy, was celebrated as the 2A Player of the Year. Despite only beginning volleyball the previous season, Johnson quickly became a dominant force, guiding his team to their inaugural state championship in the newly established 2A classification. He led 2A with 311 kills, including 23 in the championship game, and also contributed 171 digs, 54 aces, and 17 blocks. Coach Brogan Johnson noted Elijah's rapid development and dedication, transforming him into a crucial all-around player.
