All-Star Rosters See Key Changes for AL and NL Teams

The Major League Baseball All-Star Game lineups have been significantly altered, as several prominent players have been added or replaced due to injuries or scheduling conflicts. Willson Contreras of the Boston Red Sox will now represent the American League, stepping in for the Toronto Blue Jays' slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Meanwhile, the National League has made multiple adjustments to its pitching staff, notably replacing Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes and Milwaukee Brewers star Jacob Misiorowski.

Willson Contreras, a first baseman for the Boston Red Sox, has secured his fourth career All-Star selection at 34 years old. This season, his debut with the Red Sox, has seen him achieve a .284 batting average, hit 20 home runs, and record 59 RBIs across 86 games. Throughout his 11-season tenure in the major leagues, Contreras boasts a career batting average of .260, with 192 home runs and 607 RBIs in 1,164 games, having previously played for the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals before joining Boston.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 27, was initially chosen for his sixth consecutive All-Star appearance but is sidelined by persistent back problems. He will not participate in the July 14 game in Philadelphia. This season, Guerrero has maintained a .263 batting average, with four home runs and 35 RBIs over 86 games. He has a history of impressive power hitting, having launched 23 or more home runs in five consecutive seasons, including a league-leading 48 in 2021.

In the American League, Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz, 23, has already been named the starting first baseman, filling in for Guerrero. Kurtz is currently hitting .275, with 20 home runs and 66 RBIs in 89 games. The National League's pitching changes involve Riley O'Brien of the St. Louis Cardinals, Jesus Luzardo from the Philadelphia Phillies, and Braxton Ashcraft of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are replacing Skenes, Misiorowski, and Max Meyer of the Miami Marlins.

The three pitchers, Skenes, Misiorowski, and Meyer, were scheduled to start games on both Tuesday and Sunday, making them unavailable for the All-Star Game. Skenes, 24, has a 6-8 record with a 3.62 ERA in 18 starts. Misiorowski, also 24, leads the majors with a 1.62 ERA and 167 strikeouts, alongside a 10-4 record in 18 starts. Meyer, 27, has posted a 9-1 record with a 2.53 ERA across 18 starts.

O'Brien, 31, is tied for the National League lead with 22 saves and holds a 3-3 record with a 3.72 ERA in 36 appearances. Luzardo, 28, has a 7-4 record with a 3.75 ERA over 18 starts, while Ashcraft, 26, is 9-3 with a 3.24 ERA in 18 starts. Additionally, American League starting outfielder Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins will require a replacement as he has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a hip injury. This season, Buxton is batting .271 with 25 homers and 45 RBIs in 75 games.

These roster adjustments highlight the dynamic nature of professional baseball, where player health and availability often necessitate last-minute changes to prestigious events like the All-Star Game. The newly selected players bring their own impressive statistics and contributions to their respective leagues, promising an exciting and competitive Midsummer Classic for fans.
