A New Era for Angel City: Navigating Coaching Transitions

Unraveling Season Performance Leads to Coaching Change

Angel City FC officially announced the departure of head coach Alexander Straus on Wednesday, a move prompted by the team's struggles in the ongoing season. The club's recent performance has been a source of disappointment, leading to this pivotal decision.

A Challenging Period on the Field

The team's recent form has been particularly concerning, with a record of one win, six losses, and one draw in their last eight matches. This downturn has seen Angel City FC slip to the 12th position within the 16-team National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) standings.

From Promising Start to Subsequent Decline

Angel City (with 4 wins, 6 losses, and 1 draw, accumulating 13 points) initially showed strong potential, securing victories in their first three games of the season. However, this promising beginning was followed by a sharp decline in performance, marking the start of their current difficulties.

Interim Leadership Takes the Helm

In response to Straus's departure, Leif Gunnar Smerud, the 49-year-old senior assistant coach and an experienced Norwegian coaching professional, has been appointed as the interim head coach. He will immediately step into this crucial role to guide the team forward.

Acknowledging Contributions and Future Endeavors

Mark Parsons, Angel City's sporting director, conveyed the club's appreciation for Straus's commitment. Parsons highlighted Straus's dedication to shaping the team's playing style and fostering the growth of its young roster, acknowledging his leadership during a significant developmental phase for the team. The club extended best wishes for his future endeavors.

Straus's Tenure and Previous Experience

Straus, who is 50 years old, took on the role of Angel City coach on June 1, 2025. During the latter half of the previous season, he guided the team to a record of three wins, nine losses, and four draws. Prior to joining Angel City, the Norwegian coach had an extensive career overseas, coaching internationally since 2010.

Strategic Player Movement

In a separate but related development, Angel City also completed a trade on Wednesday, sending 19-year-old midfielder Kennedy Fuller to Bay FC. This transaction involved a transfer of $520,000 in total funds, reflecting ongoing strategic adjustments within the team.

Anticipating the Next Match-up

The first game under interim coach Smerud's leadership is scheduled for July 3, when Angel City will host the Orlando Pride. The NWSL is currently observing a break, primarily due to the men's World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
