Austin FC Parts Ways with Coach Estevez and Sporting Director Borrell Amidst Disappointing Season

Austin FC has made significant leadership changes, dismissing both Head Coach Nico Estevez and Sporting Director Rodolfo Borrell. This decision comes after a period of declining performance, highlighted by a recent loss to Sporting Kansas City, which currently sits at the bottom of the league. The club's management expressed a need for change to elevate the team's standing and achieve its competitive aspirations.

A New Chapter for Austin FC: The Quest for Consistent Victory

Austin FC's Leadership Undergoes Major Change

Austin FC recently announced the termination of Head Coach Nico Estevez and Sporting Director Rodolfo Borrell. This significant leadership overhaul follows a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Sporting Kansas City, a team currently last in the standings, which served as the breaking point for the club's management.

Initial Promise and Subsequent Struggles

Since its inception in 2021, Austin FC has enjoyed robust community support, regularly playing to sold-out crowds in a city new to professional sports. The team even secured a playoff berth in its second season. However, this early success has been followed by a noticeable dip in performance both on and off the field, failing to maintain the initial momentum.

The Performance Decline: A Catalyst for Action

Despite leading the team to the playoffs last year and reaching the U.S. Open Cup final, Estevez's tenure saw a difficult start to the current MLS season, marked by a 3 wins, 6 losses, and 5 draws record, alongside an early exit from the USOC to a lower-division team. These results prompted the board to take decisive action.

Estevez's Reflection on His Departure

Following the loss to Sporting Kansas City, Estevez reflected on his challenging period, acknowledging it as his 'lowest moment' with the club. He felt burdened by past team performances from before his arrival, expressing a desire to see the season through and lead the team back to the playoffs.

The Search for New Leadership Commences

However, Estevez will not be given the opportunity to turn the team's fortunes around. Austin FC has enlisted Excel Sports Management to spearhead the search for a new head coach, with the World Cup break offering a timely window for this transition.

Club Ownership's Vision for the Future

Anthony Precourt, CEO and owner of Austin FC, lauded Estevez for his dedication while emphasizing the club's firm belief in its potential to contend for a playoff spot. He stated that the current results necessitate a change to meet their objectives of consistent league success and playoff qualification.

Challenges with Player Acquisitions and Team Dynamics

The club has also faced setbacks with key player acquisitions, including a significant injury to forward Brandon Vazquez shortly after his record-breaking transfer. Additionally, other high-profile signings like Myrto Uzuni and Osman Bukari have seen varied impacts, with Bukari's departure and Facundo Torres's arrival reshaping the team's designated player roster.

Interim Management and Upcoming Fixtures

As the club navigates this transition, Davy Arnaud will assume the role of interim manager for Austin FC's final match before the MLS season pauses for the World Cup, a critical game against St. Louis City. This interim period sets the stage for the club's future direction.
