Baez's Record-Breaking Performance Ignites Cardinals Promotion Buzz

Joshua Baez, a rapidly ascending talent within the Cardinals' minor league system, is increasingly difficult for the major league team to overlook due to his exceptional performance at Triple-A Memphis.

The 22-year-old Baez demonstrated remarkable power by hitting four home runs in five at-bats during Memphis' 12-5 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday night. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 220 pounds, Baez's incredible feat places him among a select group, as only 16 players in the minor leagues have hit four homers in a single game over the past 21 seasons. This achievement aligns him with other distinguished Cardinals prospects, Chandler Simpson (2022) and Tyrone Horne (1998), as the only players in the last three decades to hit four home runs in a minor league game.

Baez, a second-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, has witnessed several former Memphis teammates, including Bryan Torres, Jimmy Crooks, Nathan Church, and Blaze Jordan, receive promotions to the major leagues after excelling at the Triple-A level. Despite the current outfield setup featuring Jordan Walker, Lars Nootbaar, and Church, which seemingly leaves no immediate opening for regular playing time, this situation could quickly change due to injuries or as the MLB Trade Deadline approaches in late July. Currently, Baez boasts an impressive slash line of .282/.345/.621/.976 for the season, with 13 doubles, a Triple-A-leading 23 home runs, and 58 RBI. His power surge includes 10 home runs in May and an additional seven long balls in just 12 games in June. His home runs on Tuesday night demonstrated significant power, with exit velocities over 100 mph and distances exceeding 350 feet, solidifying his place in the record books.

Baez's journey has been marked by significant improvement; after struggling with high strikeout rates during his first four minor league seasons, he experienced a breakout year in 2025. Splitting his time between High-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield, he recorded 23 doubles and 20 home runs, along with 54 stolen bases, contributing to Springfield's Texas League title. Once considered outside the Cardinals' top 30 prospects, Baez has now climbed to No. 3 on MLB Pipeline's prospect rankings within the St. Louis system, making a compelling case for a major league call-up.

Baez's journey highlights the importance of perseverance and continuous development in sports. His ability to overcome early career challenges and dramatically improve his performance serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that dedication and hard work can lead to remarkable achievements and ultimately, a path to success.
