Bloomington North Boys' Volleyball Team Concludes Historic First Season in Sectional Final

In a season of firsts, the Bloomington North boys' volleyball team achieved an extraordinary feat, reaching the sectional finals in their inaugural year. Although they ultimately succumbed to Evansville Memorial in a grueling championship match, the team's journey was marked by immense growth, camaraderie, and a competitive spirit that defied expectations. This historic run, characterized by close contests and unwavering determination, signifies a promising future for boys' volleyball in Bloomington.

Historic Run Ends in Thrilling Sectional Showdown

The Martinsville Sectional, held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, was a day of intense volleyball action, culminating in Evansville Memorial's first-ever title victory after 14 sets played across three matches. The Cougars, Bloomington North's first-year team, demonstrated incredible resilience and skill throughout the tournament. In a nail-biting final, Evansville Memorial, led by Max Aslinger and Luke Dockrey, edged out Bloomington North with set scores of 25-23, 25-23, 12-25, and 25-22.

Earlier in the day, Evansville Memorial mounted a comeback from two sets down to defeat the host Artesians in a five-set thriller, setting the stage for their championship clash against the Cougars. Bloomington North, having entered the sectional with high aspirations, proved to be a formidable opponent. Senior setter Coen Berin reflected on the team's season-long goals: "Beat South and win sectionals." He noted that this mentality fueled their impressive performance.

Senior outside hitter Chris Estivill-Kilmer praised the team's transformation, highlighting how much each player improved and how deeply they bonded as friends. Despite the pressure of their first final, the Cougars showcased their composure and skill. Estivill-Kilmer described the atmosphere as "nervous excitement the whole time," underscoring the team's collective effort. All eight players, including five seniors, made significant contributions in the championship match.

Coach Charles Cook acknowledged the mental and physical toll of the long day, which saw North triumph over Evansville Reitz in a hard-fought semifinal, winning 25-10, 25-13, 14-25, 21-25, 16-14. Despite the loss in the final, Cook expressed immense pride in his team. "We made history bringing a first-year program to a sectional finals, and we really competed," he stated. He also noted that Evansville Memorial likely played with extra motivation, having previously lost to North at home.

The initial sets of the final were characterized by tight scores, with Memorial securing wins after late rallies. Cook pointed out that passing and serving, fundamental aspects of their strategy, were slightly off in the first two sets, hindering their offensive flow and allowing Memorial to capitalize with strong blocks. However, in the third set, North found its rhythm, playing what Cook called "our clean version of BHSN boys volleyball." Estivill-Kilmer added that a shift in mindset, from nervousness to a carefree approach, allowed them to "swing at every ball," which proved effective.

The fourth set was equally competitive, featuring six ties before Memorial pulled ahead. Despite a spirited comeback by North, Memorial ultimately held on, sealing their victory with two decisive kills from Dockrey. Cook lauded the high level of competitive volleyball displayed by both teams.

A Legacy of Growth and Inspiration

Throughout their nine sets of play in eight hours, the Bloomington North team maintained an exceptional level of drive and commitment. Coach Cook emphasized that their "Vamos! Let's go!" culture, inspired by their tennis players, was deeply ingrained in the team's spirit. While the season has concluded, the sense of accomplishment and pride remains palpable.

Berin articulated the team's satisfaction, despite the outcome: "We played the absolute best volleyball that we've played all season. And we put a lot of work into our practices all season, and it really showed out today, even though it was not exactly the outcome that we wanted. I'm just so proud of everyone and the work they put in." Coach Cook, reflecting on photos from their first practices, marveled at the team's incredible progress. Competing for a sectional title in their debut season is, as he put it, "nothing better than that."
