Tarik Muharemović, the Bosnian defender involved in a notable World Cup incident with United States forward Folarin Balogun, has completed his transfer to Premier League side Leeds. The US-owned club announced the acquisition of the center-back on a five-year agreement from Italian club Sassuolo, with reports indicating a transfer fee of approximately 40 million euros (equivalent to 46 million US dollars).
During Bosnia-Herzegovina's second group stage match at the World Cup, a 4-1 defeat against Switzerland, the 23-year-old Muharemović was sent off. He subsequently returned to play against the United States in the round of 32. In that game, while the US held a 2-0 lead due to Balogun's goal, a challenge for the ball led to Balogun stepping on Muharemović's ankle. Following a video review, Balogun received a red card and was expected to be suspended for the round of 16 match against Belgium. However, former US President Donald Trump intervened, reportedly pressuring FIFA President Gianni Infantino to prevent Balogun's suspension. Balogun ultimately participated in Belgium's 4-1 victory.
Muharemović, who previously helped Sassuolo secure the Serie B title in 2025 during a loan spell from Juventus, now joins Leeds as the club prepares for its second season back in the Premier League after finishing 14th. Leeds United is under the ownership of 49ers Enterprises, the investment division of the San Francisco NFL franchise.
This move signifies a fresh start for Muharemović and a strategic reinforcement for Leeds United as they aim for continued success in the competitive Premier League. His arrival underscores the global nature of modern football and the complex dynamics that can intertwine sports with political influence.
