BYU Football: Cody Hagen Announces Medical Retirement

BYU's wide receiver group will see a significant change as Cody Hagen steps away from the sport. Hagen has officially announced his medical retirement from football, a decision confirmed by both the university and the athlete himself, citing ongoing injury concerns.

Hagen's career with the Cougars, though brief, was marked by notable contributions despite persistent injuries, most notably a torn PCL last December which he bravely played through. Over two seasons, he accumulated 15 receptions for 126 yards and added 93 rushing yards with two crucial touchdowns. His agility was particularly evident in key games, including a 57-yard score in the 2025 season opener and a 32-yard touchdown run against Colorado that secured a 24-21 victory.

A highly-rated prospect from Corner Canyon High, Hagen was recognized as a 4-star recruit and the No. 5 talent in Utah for the class of 2022. His high school career was stellar, with 201 receptions for 3,927 yards and 51 touchdowns, leading his team to three state championships and earning him Utah Gatorade Player of the Year honors. An accomplished track and field athlete, Hagen also secured four individual state titles. While his playing days are over, Hagen plans to continue his academic journey at BYU. His departure, following that of top receivers Parker Kingston and Chase Roberts, necessitates that BYU's offensive strategy will now rely heavily on emerging talents like Jojo Phillips, Tiger Bachmeier, Reggie Frischknecht, Kyler Kasper, Tei Nacua, and tight ends Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga.

Hagen's journey exemplifies the resilience and commitment required in collegiate sports. His decision to prioritize long-term health is a testament to his maturity, and his legacy will undoubtedly inspire his teammates. While his presence on the field will be missed, his contributions and dedication will remain a cherished part of BYU's football history. This transition opens doors for new players to rise and showcase their abilities, fostering a new era of growth and potential for the team.
