Just weeks into the 2026 high school football season, Hollister High School's varsity football program has been called off. The San Benito High School District announced on Monday, September 21, its decision to suspend the season due to an ongoing review concerning multiple members of the team. The district emphasized that the roster no longer contained enough players to safely compete for the remainder of the season, leading to this difficult but necessary step.
District's Statement and Rationale Behind the Decision
Superintendent Shawn Tennenbaum communicated the district's position in a letter to the school community, stating that careful consideration was given to the circumstances and the best interests of all students involved. The primary concern cited was the lack of sufficient student-athletes to ensure the safety of the team on the field, which ultimately led to the season's premature end.
Coaching Changes and Initial Forfeitures Precede Season Halt
This drastic measure follows earlier events within the program. Eleven days prior to the cancellation, Hollister's head coach, Thomas Sullivan, was placed on paid administrative leave as the district initiated an investigation into an unspecified matter related to the football program. Former coach Chris Cameron stepped in as interim coach, and under his guidance, the team secured a 27-20 victory against Wilcox on September 11, improving their record to 3-0. However, six days later, the team forfeited its scheduled game against Alisal, with the district attributing this to an "ongoing review of a recent report regarding team activities."
Impact on Remaining Schedule and Other School Activities
The cancellation means Hollister will not host Soquel for its planned Homecoming game on September 25, nor will it compete against Palma, Monterey, Carmel, Salinas, and North Salinas. Despite the varsity team's situation, the school's junior varsity and freshman football teams are set to continue their seasons. Additionally, Homecoming events, including the parade and dance, are expected to proceed as scheduled, aiming to maintain a sense of normalcy for the student body.
