Canales emerged victorious in the 50-meter breaststroke at the USA Swimming Junior Nationals held in Irvine, California. Her winning time of 32.04 seconds narrowly edged out Grace Koenig-Song from Chicago, who finished just four-hundredths of a second later at 32.08 seconds. This remarkable performance came after a rigorous week and a half for Canales, who had also placed seventh in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:10.69 on Monday.
Canales, who is set to enter her senior year at Boerne Champion, had a demanding schedule leading up to her national title. Last week, she participated in several events at the USA Swimming National Championships, also in Irvine. Her events included the 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter breaststroke, 100-meter breaststroke, and 200-meter individual medley. Notably, she advanced to the finals in the Under 18 50-meter breaststroke, securing an impressive third-place finish.
Recognized as the top-ranked girls' swimmer in her state, Canales was previously named the 2026 Express-News Girls Swimmer of the Year.
