The Carolina Panthers have announced the release of cornerback Tyrek Funderburk, effective Tuesday. The decision comes after Funderburk was initially placed on injured reserve following an undisclosed injury during the recent roster reduction to 53 players.
Funderburk, a 25-year-old talent from Indian Trail, N.C., began his college football journey at the University of Richmond before transferring to Appalachian State University for his final year of eligibility in 2023. During his impressive season with Appalachian State, he tallied 46 tackles, half a sack, four interceptions, and returned two of those interceptions for touchdowns, earning him first-team All-Sun Belt recognition. His professional career started with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2024, where he appeared in 13 games, making two starts and recording 14 tackles, one forced fumble, and a pass defensed. Following his time with the Buccaneers, Funderburk spent the 2025 season on the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad before inking a reserve/future contract with the Panthers in January of the current year.
