Celebrating El Paso's Top High School Sports Highlights of the 2025-26 Season

With the 2025-26 academic year's high school athletic competitions now complete, the El Paso Times is initiating a community poll to honor the top achievements of local athletes and teams. This week, the focus is on identifying the most impactful moments from the entire sports season, allowing the public to recognize the extraordinary efforts and successes witnessed across various disciplines.

Several remarkable events and performances have been nominated for consideration. Among them are the Eastwood girls wrestling team, which secured their second consecutive Class 6A state championship, and the Americas boys soccer team, who made it to the state Final Four in Class 5A, Division 1. Not to be outdone, the Burges boys soccer team also reached the state Final Four in Class 5A, Division 2, while the Bel Air girls wrestling squad earned a third-place finish at the Class 5A state tournament. In football, the Ysleta Indians celebrated their first district championship since 1997, marking a significant milestone for the program. The Burges boys basketball team competed for the Region 1-5A, Division 2 title, and the Americas baseball team vied for the Region 1-5A, Division 1 title. Individual accolades include Giselle Gandara of Eastlake volleyball being named a Freshman All-American by Max Preps, and the Canutillo boys 1,600 relay team earning a bronze medal at the Class 5A state meet, a first for their school's relay program. Another unforgettable moment was the El Dorado football team's thrilling 77-76 victory over Amarillo High in the Class 5A, Division 1 playoffs. In track and field, Matthew Portillo from Clint secured a silver medal in pole vault at the Class 4A state meet during his debut appearance, and Jordan Owens of Andress also claimed a silver in the long jump at the Class 5A state meet in his first state competition. Finally, the Chapin girls track and field team achieved a commendable third place at the Region 1-5A championships.

These outstanding moments represent the dedication, hard work, and competitive spirit of El Paso's high school athletes. By participating in this vote, the community has a unique opportunity to celebrate these young individuals and teams who have not only excelled in their respective sports but have also inspired many through their perseverance and triumphs. Each nomination reflects a story of passion and commitment, contributing to a vibrant legacy of athletic excellence in the region.
