Central Football Seeks Winning Season with New Quarterback Luke Harding

Champaign Central High School's football team is embarking on a new season with aspirations of achieving a winning record, a feat not accomplished since 2018. A pivotal change sees Luke Harding, previously a wide receiver, stepping into the crucial role of starting quarterback. The team's schedule presents an immediate challenge with an opening conference game against Danville, serving as an early indicator of their potential. Coach Matthew Leskis expresses confidence in Harding's capabilities, citing his prior experience as a quarterback and the strong camaraderie within the offensive unit. The team's schedule is notable for its numerous home games, offering a significant advantage throughout the season.

Central Maroons Kick Off Season with New QB and Home Advantage

In a significant development for Champaign Central High School's football program, senior Luke Harding has transitioned from wide receiver to quarterback, poised to lead the Maroons in their quest for a winning season. This strategic shift comes as the team aims to surpass its 2018 performance, which marked their last winning record. Head coach Matthew Leskis, observing Harding's natural throwing ability and past experience at the quarterback position during his younger years, expressed optimism regarding his new signal-caller. "He's always had a decent arm," Leskis noted, emphasizing the importance of familiarizing Harding with the team's offensive schemes and leveraging his maturity and previous Friday night game experience.

The offensive line, featuring four returning players who saw extensive action in 2025, is expected to provide a strong foundation for Harding. This experienced line, coupled with the close-knit relationship Harding shares with his wide receivers, including senior Talin Baker, is anticipated to facilitate a smooth transition for the new quarterback. Baker spoke of their long-standing connection, stating, "We've played since the youth league and we've always known each other. We have a bond that's pretty unbreakable and the connection is pretty well." Both Harding and Baker have reportedly taken on increased leadership roles during pre-season practices, setting a positive tone for the team.

The Harding family's athletic prowess extends beyond Luke, as his sister, Eden, is also a starting quarterback for the girls' flag football team at Central. The Maroons' schedule for the upcoming season is notably favorable, with the team remaining within the Champaign-Urbana area until week six. This includes three consecutive home games to open the season, followed by an away game at Urbana, and then another home game in week five. With only two road trips scheduled for the entire season, including a week nine matchup against Centennial, Central benefits from a significant home-field advantage.

As the Maroons prepare to face Danville, a key focus for Coach Leskis will be containing D'Mario Jackson, a standout athlete who clinched state titles in the 100, 200, and 400-meter dashes at the 2026 IHSA state track meet in Class 2A. Leskis acknowledged Jackson's exceptional talent and dedication, stating, "That's quite an accomplishment... You can be born with some speed but he obviously puts the work in." He stressed the necessity of being constantly aware of Jackson's presence on the field. The highly anticipated Central vs. Danville game will be prominently featured on WCIA 3 News's "Friday Football Fever" show, marking the program's debut for 2026.

This season holds significant promise for Champaign Central. With a seasoned offensive line, a new quarterback who brings both past experience and strong team chemistry, and a favorable home-heavy schedule, the Maroons are well-positioned to make a strong push for a winning record. The early test against Danville will provide crucial insights into their preparedness and potential, particularly in containing formidable opponents. The collective leadership shown by Luke Harding and Talin Baker, alongside the support from the coaching staff, underscores a renewed sense of determination within the team. Football enthusiasts eagerly await the unfolding of Central's journey this season.
